Kapiʻolani: Serving Up Support
2025 CMN Champion Aurelia Awa and her mom were treated to a burger at the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikīkī Beach.
In July, guests at five historic Hawai‘i hotels found something extra special on restaurant and bar menus – an opportunity to give back.
Kyo-ya Hotels and Resorts launched its first-ever campaign for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. The Moana Surfrider, The Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton Waikīkī, Sheraton Princess Kaʻiulani and Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa joined together for “Burgers & Mai Tais for Miracles.” Guests at their eateries were invited to buy a tasty burger or mai tai with a portion of proceeds going to help fund the future Teen Room and Child Life programs at Kapiʻolani.
Kyo-ya’s staff was also inspired to show their own support. They held several fundraisers, ranging from karaoke contests and root beer float sales to dunking booths with managers in the hot seat. In one month, Kyo-ya raised $33,500 for Kapi‘olani. Employees are proud of the results, and many find donating personally fulfilling.
“My wife was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2011, and the medical center was there for our family. Today, she is healthy,” said Michael Takayama, Kyo-ya senior vice president. “I look at Kapiʻolani not only as a hospital, but a village. And in Hawaiʻi, it takes a village to raise a family.”
