Pali Momi: In Case of Emergency

“We take care of some of the most grateful and kind patients I’ve ever met."

You never know when you’ll need emergency care. But when you do, Pali Momi Medical Center will be there for you. Its Emergency Department (ED), which is also the only primary stroke center serving Central and West O‘ahu, saw nearly 45,000 patients in 2025. The need for emergency services continues to grow, and the ‘Aiea medical center keeps answering the call.

The ED team recently created Laulima, a new space where they can see patients with less-serious medical conditions in a less intimidating area, while leaving beds available for those who need a higher level of care.

“Laulima is not separate from the ED – it is a reflection of what our ED does best,” said Dr. Roderick Alfonso, Pali Momi ED medical director. “We’ve seen improvements across the board. Most importantly, patients feel they are being cared for in a space designed for healing, not compromise.”

The additional space has helped decrease wait times and allowed providers to spend more time with patients both in Laulima and the ED. The renovations were made possible by generous donors like Corinne Oishi, who gave to Pali Momi as a mahalo for the care she received as a patient there.

“Dr. Alfonso’s treatment was, in a word, superb. Beyond his evident medical expertise, what truly stood out was his genuine concern for my well-being,” Corinne said. “This level of personal care is beyond anything I have previously experienced in a medical setting. As a patient, I felt remarkably calm and at ease, a direct result of Dr. Alfonso’s compassionate and reassuring demeanor.”

“What makes Pali Momi special is the strength of its culture. There is a true ʻohana here – not just in name, but in practice,” Dr. Alfonso said. “We take care of some of the most grateful and kind patients I’ve ever met. At the same time, it is an absolute honor to work with such an incredible team.”
