HPH: A Lasting Gift for the Community
Juliet Ueda loved ʻAiea. She grew up there. After nursing school, she and her husband, Shiro, moved back and raised their family near her childhood home. And for decades, Juliet cared for people from ʻAiea, Pearl City and surrounding areas as a nurse at the only medical facilities in the community, Leeward Hospital and the Fronk Clinic.
Once the hospital closed and Juliet retired, the clinic was cleared away to make room for Pali Momi Medical Center. Pali Momi became the family’s place for doctors’ appointments and checkups. Though the facilities were brand new, Juliet and Shiro loved the continuing sense of community they felt from the physicians, nurses and staff at every appointment. They rarely had to leave their beloved neighborhood for medical care.
Upon their passing, their children discovered their mother had a small individual retirement account. They decided to make a gift to the trusted medical center that cared for their parents throughout their lives. The donation will help nurses at Pali Momi further their education. The gift will also go toward cancer care and the medical center’s ʻOhana Fund, which provides items including medical equipment, medication and transportation to patients in financial need.
It's a lasting gift from a humble couple to the friends, neighbors and community they loved.
