Pali Momi: Supporting Health Care at Home

“We believe innovation in health care education empowers communities to thrive.”

David S. Vogel grew up in Hawai‘i. His path took him a continent away: first to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his undergraduate degree, New York University for his master’s, then eventually he settled down in Florida. But when he and his wife, Thais López Vogel, founded VoLo Foundation, David’s passion for giving back extended across the ocean to his home state.

Public health and education are two of the main focuses for the foundation. In 2023, David and Thais made their first gift to Hawai‘i Pacific Health in support of its Clinical Education for Teens program. HPH works in partnership with the Hawai‘i Department of Education to offer high school students clinical training on their own campus.

“At VoLo Foundation, we believe innovation in health care education empowers communities to thrive,” Thais said.

In 2025, the foundation’s support of HPH’s innovative education programs grew. VoLo Foundation gave $100,000 toward the Waipahu Academic Health Center. The community clinic at Waipahu High School gives families in the neighborhood convenient access to care from HPH physicians, nurses and staff. At the same time, students in the high school’s Academy of Health & Sciences receive real-life experience while helping to treat their own community.

“Our partnership with the Waipahu Academic Health Center expands opportunities for the next generation of health care leaders,” Thais said. “Together, we’re advancing a future defined by knowledge, collaboration and compassion.”
